Rescuing and rehabilitating dogs from dogfighting rings: a story of despair turned to hope

The inspiring journey of Fiona and Rascal from trauma to recovery and love

Dogfighting is a barbaric and illegal blood sport that continues to plague communities worldwide. The dogs involved in these cruel activities often suffer from physical and emotional scars that last a lifetime. However, there is hope for these canine victims.

Fiona and Rascal are two former dogfighting dogs who were rescued, rehabilitated, and given a second chance at life. Their story is one of resilience, love, and hope.

The ASPCA’s efforts to rescue dogs from dogfighting rings

Fiona and Rascal were among 89 dogs rescued from a dogfighting ring across Long Island, New York City, and several other states. The ASPCA played a crucial role in removing these dogs from the abusive situation and giving them a chance at a better life.

Rehabilitation process for former dogfighting dogs

Fiona and Rascal were initially frightened and traumatized when they arrived at the ASPCA Cruelty Recovery Center in Columbus, Ohio. The center’s behavior team worked tirelessly to help the dogs regain their confidence and trust in people.

Over time, Fiona and Rascal’s transformation was remarkable. Fiona, in particular, became a helper dog for other fearful canines at the center.

Finding a forever home for rescued dogs

Becky Spohn, the Senior Manager of Facilities at the ASPCA, adopted Rascal and Fiona. She was searching for two large-sized dogs to join her on hikes, long walks, and to cuddle on the couch with.

With patience, love, and time, Becky helped Fiona (now known as Arya) overcome her fear and adjust to her new home. Today, both Rascal and Arya are happy and loved members of Becky’s family.

Adopting rescued pets

Fiona and Rascal’s story is a testament to the power of love and rehabilitation in healing rescued animals. If you’re interested in adopting a pet, please consider adopting from a rescue organization or animal shelter. And if you have a rescue story of your own, share it with others and help raise awareness about the importance of rescue and adoption.

Their story offers hope that even dogs who have experienced trauma and suffering can still find happiness, love, and a forever home with the right care and attention.
