Outside of Caldwell, Texas an unknown and deplorable culprit shot a one year old Catahoula dog in the face and abdomen before abandoning the dog to die a long, slow, painful death on the side of the road. However, it wasn't time for this poor, abused pup to go yet. He wandered into the backyard of a family who was much kinder than the scum that shot him.
This family called the Burleson County Sheriff's Office for help who in turn called the True Blue Animal Rescue of Brenham to get emergency care for the dog. The dog, which was named Chance, was taken to the Brenham Veterinary Hospital where veterinarians found that the bullet had entered the dog's left eye and exited through the back of his head. In some miracle, Chance suffered no brain damage, but veterinarians could not salvage the damaged eye. At first, the veterinarians had been so enthralled with the horrific head wound that they did not notice the holes in the dog's abdomen. However, after the head wound was treated, they noticed that there were small pellet holes in the dog's abdomen. These pellets were suspected to come from an air gun while the shot to the head was thought to come from a low caliber handgun or rifle. Upon closer inspection, the doctors noticed that the dog's tail had been removed incorrectly at some point in the past, indicating what has likely been a life full of abuse.
However, the ongoing abuse has not negatively affected the dog's personality. He is described as friendly and eager for love by the foster home that has taken in while his wounds heal. Chance has to remain on painkillers and antibiotics for the next two weeks before having to return to Brenham Veterinary Hospital to have his damaged left eye removed. Veterinarians have high hopes that Chance will recover, after which he will formally go up for adoption.
