Earlier this year, Chihuahua Lucy Liu (not to be confused with actress Lucy Liu) surprised her petmom by adopting a pair of foster kittens that she had intended to care for. Her owner thought it might have just been a one-time occurrence, but Lucy Liu is in the mothering game once again.
Lucy Liu's owner, Jamie Henion, is a vet tech at the Haverstraw Animal Hospital in Suffern, New York as well as a volunteer for the Hi Tor Animal Care Center in Pomona. She would occasionally bring home animals that need around the clock care, but when she brought home two kittens, her Chihuahua immediately took to them. Even though Lucy Liu had never been pregnant, she immediately took to her mothering duties for the pair of kittens, Boo and Sully, cleaning them and even producing milk to nurse them.
After Boo and Sully grew up and ultimately found their forever homes, Henion brought home another pair of kittens, just to see what would happen. Low and behold, Lucy Liu took to them again in the same way.
Jamie Henion told her tale to the curious local newspaper, “I took (the kittens) home with the intention of bottle-feeding them. And my dog was just very curious and getting closer and closer to them,” Henion said, recalling Lucy Lu’s first encounter with the days-old kittens. “I kept pushing her away, … but she was so persistent, and she started licking them.”
Lucy Liu is unspayed due to health concerns and the veterinarians think that her heat cycle may have contributed to her milk coming in and her devoted mothering. She is now nursing the 5-week-old Garfield and 10-week-old Quicksilver as if they were her own.
The Hi Tor Animal Care Center is now hailing Lucy Liu as their littlest volunteer as well as the volunteer with the biggest heart and the biggest commitment.
