The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for breaking into the Hattiesburg Zoo and stealing a pink flamingo.

The Case: The Hattiesburg Police Department gives the following account: On Tuesday, October 7, officers responded to a reported disturbance at the zoo involving four people. The same day, officers were called to Westover Drive and W 4th Street in reference to a pink flamingo on the side of the road. The flamingo, which was confirmed missing from the zoo, suffered multiple injuries and had to be euthanized.

Lydia Sattler, Mississippi state director for The HSUS, said: “I can’t imagine how afraid this poor animal must have been, getting torn from her home and abused to the point where she could not be saved. We’re hopeful this reward will bring forward anyone with information about this despicable crime.”

Animal Cruelty: Getting the serious attention of law enforcement, prosecutors and the community in cases involving allegations of cruelty to animals is an essential step in protecting the community. The connection between animal cruelty and human violence is well documented. Studies show a correlation between animal cruelty and all manner of other crimes, from narcotics and firearms violations to battery and sexual assault.

Lieutenant Jon Traxler said: “The City of Hattiesburg and the Hattiesburg Police will not allow someone to steal property and not be prosecuted.”

The Investigators: The Hattiesburg Police Department is investigating. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call (601) 544-7900.
