We all know that a lot of animals are treated like trash, but not too many of them actually end up in a trash truck bound for the landfill. For one young pup that was the case and it almost cost him his life. Last Friday, as trash employees were loading a truck full of garbage bound for the landfill in Dickson, Tennessee one heard a cry from beneath the garbage. Not sure what kind of cry it was at the time, the employee stopped the hydraulic compacting machine that would have crushed the trash and the crier inside. After digging out six feet of trash, the employees found a weak, dirty and wet puppy.
Solid Waste Director Jim Lunn told a local Tennessee newspaper that the trash being brought in with a puppy surprise on the inside was from front-end dumpster loading trucks. While they could say the puppy was most likely dumped in a dumpster and not a residential trash can, they have no way to pinpoint the area the pup was dumped in. It is unlikely the abuser of this particular pup will ever be caught.
The weak puppy in question was a three month old Pit Bull mix that was surrendered to Last Chance Pet Rescue after being found for medical attention. The pet rescue gave him the name of Midas during treatment. When the puppy first arrived he was covered with demodex mange, had been starved and sustained damage to his head and eye. While they gave him fluids, food, water, medication and gave Midas a bath he was too weak to even stand and no one was sure if he was going to make it.
However, on Monday Last Chance Pet Rescue released this statement on their Facebook page, "Can you believe how far this boy has come since being dug out of the trash last Friday morning? This is what medical care, food and love can do for an animal; bring it back from the brink of death. He is in for a wonderful life now. He is in foster care and on his way to restored health. Thanks so much to the landfill workers who heard his cries and saved his life!"
