Hero the calf was found freezing in a Virginia field earlier in November. While many people may see a cow's hoof and think they are invincible to the elements, but Hero lost both of his back hooves to frostbite. However, now armed with a set of prosthetic hooves, Hero the cow is headed to a new home.

When Hero was found, a good Samaritan brought him to Kitty Martin at Selah Ranch All Animal Rescue. They had dealt with the rehabilitation of many animals, but a calf with two amputated back hooves was a tricky situation all around so they transported the calf to Texas A&M University. It was there veterinarians preformed a five hour long operation that fit Hero with prosthetic hooves. However, they had to remove two inches from his back legs in order to get the new appendages to fit.

After the surgery Hero bounced back quickly, walking around and doing everything that a happy, healthy calf would do. The veterinarians are confident that with proper at-home care, Hero should be able to live a perfectly normal life. The people of Houston are praising the veterinarians at Texas A&M for going above and beyond the call of duty.
