Are you a serious cat person? One that loves to be around all different kinds of cats but limit yourself to a couple so as to not earn that reputation as the "crazy cat lady" in the neighborhood? Well, there might just be a haven in the world for you and other cat lovers. January 18th marked the grand opening of Maison de Moggy, the first cat cafe in Scotland, indeed, all of the United Kingdom. This cat cafe opened as a temporary pop-up in Stockbridge, Edinburgh where it will remain open until June when they move to a permanent location.
So what is a cat cafe exactly? The ground level business is much like a regular cafe, but with cats. Visitors can enjoy watching or interacting with the cats as they snooze, climb and hide in nooks and crannies while having some tea or coffee. Baristas serve up treats while cat nannies make sure cats and customers both have the best possible experience.
The lower level of the establishment goes the extra mile to provide a lounge for up to 10 customers at a time that can enjoy what is described as a "spa-like" experience with the cafe's most cuddly cats.
Owner and founder Laura O'Neill states she got this unique idea from her visit to Tokyo, Japan where cat cafes originated. In an interview with a local Edinburgh TV station she describes her visit, “The experience was amazing, it was a big cat cafe over two floors…You took off your shoes, put on slippers, washed your hands and went and chilled with the cats.”
Although only open for a week so far, it is proving to be a real hit with local customers that find this unique cafe a real experience and a great place to bond with friendly cats.
