When Emilia Lucchese was walking the streets of Messinia, Sicily one morning with a friend, she suddenly came to a halt. She had thought she heard something, whines from inside the trash can she had just passed. Where as many may have just kept on walking, Lucchese checked inside the trash can. The whine grew louder and more frantic from inside one of the tied plastic bags. Ripping it open, this random stranger found a dog inside.
“I thought maybe the dog had got trapped inside [the bin] after looking for scraps or something, and somebody had shut the lid,” she said.
The agonizing male dog was stuffed inside the tied plastic trash bag with its legs tied with wire. Emilia Lucchese immediately removed the bag from the trash can and opened it up. The dog was so weak from dehydration that it was unable to even lift its head. Lucchese offered the dog some water and its tail wagged from her caring touch.
“It was in shock and really thirsty so I assume it had been there for a while,” said Lucchese. “[The dog] started to come around only after we poured water from a bottle into its mouth.”
Lucchese and a friend took the dog to the veterinarian where she named it Oliviero. Slowly, but surely he has been recovering from his ordeal. Lucchese adopted the dog and made sure he was properly fed and groomed after the veterinarian rehydrated him with fluids and treated other minor wounds.
Emilia Lucchese took video of her rescue efforts and posted them on an Italian social media site; it has since gone viral and attracted police attention. Now a police investigation has been opened in hopes to find Oliviero's previous owner and abusers soon. However, the police currently have no suspects in their still ongoing investigation.
