When a dog chases a squirrel, they'll follow it right up until the moment it scampers up a tree and that is usually the end of it. However, for pit bull mix Louis, he went the extra mile by managing to climb up onto a tree branch in a South Carolina marsh to disastrous results.
Louis ended up precariously hanging 15 feet above the ground with a tree limb pierced through his lower torso both holding him in place and causing incredible pain. A concerned resident on the edge of the marsh heard the dogs continuous barking and ended up wading and wandering for miles until he found the poor pooch.
After quickly contacting the Charleston County Sheriff's Office and animal control, a rescue team was able to safely get Louis down from the tree without any additional damage or trauma. Luckily for Louis, the tree branch did not manage to puncture anything essential, but just narrowly missed his bladder. He remains on an IV drip and is still in critical condition.
While Louis still has his life, this story does not have an all together happy ending. There was no foul play suspected in the case so the pup's family was contacted. Unfortunately, they posted this message on the Charleston Animal Society Facebook Page:
“My love, my Louis Vuitton Smith, was rescued out of a tree on Wadmalaw. My tears can’t fill the relief in my heart that someone cared. I’m not fortunate enough to pay his bills so I have to surrender him. I can’t focus…. I work on Kiawah Island and I called off work today once I found out what happened to my love. They understood because I talked about him frequent[ly]. But just pray Louis pulls thru and our paths cross again. Because I will never be the same without him. Thank you.”
