Where Mama was Found
Last April, Reddit users Leyley904 and cat rescuer extraordinaire was told about a potentially pregnant cat that lived around the local Walmart. Although it had been storming all day and she expected to find nothing, she went and searched the area. On the brink of going home, the squeaky mews of young kittens caught her attention. Behind a few unused shelves and sitting in a half an inch of water in the Garden Center was mama and her little pile of freshly newborn kittens. Mama cat was hungry enough to catch and her kittens were still pretty immobile, easy enough to scoop up.
Calming Down, Warming Up
Leyley brought the new litter home and cleaned up the mother and the five perfect black little kittens. She decided to give the mother cat the name Marvel while naming the kittens Stark, Rodney, Jarvis, Pepper and Happy, dubbing the group the Iron Man Kittens.
Generally every cat's expression after a bath, newborn or no. At just hours old, this squirmy little worm fits into the palm of Leyley's hand.
As nice as Marvel looks in the pictures, Leyley states that as soon as she got her belly full, she returned to her pissed off feral cat stuck in a house demeanor. Hissing and clawing at Leyley whenever she got too close.
After only about a week of life, the kittens begin to display one of the worst cases of ringworm that Leyley has ever seen in her long history with fostering cats. However, Mama Marvel isn't letting her get too close without a fight. She ended up modifying a Grab and Reach tool so that she could slide the kittens away from mom without getting clawed to oblivion to socialize, wean and treat their ringworm.
Eight Weeks Later
After eight weeks of life, Mom's feral behavior is starting to influence the kittens. She still paws and hisses at Leyley, encouraging the kittens to do the same. The kittens are now fully weaned so they are separated from the mother to further socialize them and make them adoptable.
Off to be Fixed
Mom is caught in a box trap and taken to the vet to be spayed.
To the Farm
After being spayed at the vet, Marvel is taken to live outside on a farm with other rescued cats. The perfect retreat for a city feral that can't adapt to the indoors.
Growing Like Weeds
Meanwhile, the little super heroes remain with Leyley and just keep on growing.
Setting Up for Success
With the help of a local shelter, Leyley got all the kittens fixed, vaccinated and microchipped for their future life. This took a little longer than usual due the kittens being a little small for their age to have the surgery.
Up for Adoption
At six and a half months old, the Iron Man kittens were sent to the adoption facility of a local rescue operation to get maximum exposure for adoptions. At first they were passed up for the more colorful kittens, but within a few weeks all of the Iron Man bunch had found wonderful, loving homes.
