Actress Mayim Bialik has teamed up with Cruelty Free International to campaign for a United States ban on all animal tests for cosmetics.

Bialik, who plays Amy Farrah Fowler on the hit show The Big Bang Theory, joins Norman Reedus, Peter Dinklage and Ashley Bell in putting the issue of cosmetics testing on animals in the spotlight for consumers and policy makers around the world.

“It is very important to me to speak out on behalf of animals who cannot protest their suffering and ask the compassionate people of the United States to join me, and Cruelty Free International, to call on the US Government to end the outdated use of animals for cosmetics testing once and for all,” said Bialik. “It doesn’t take a genius to know that using animals for these cruel and unnecessary tests is unjustifiable.”

Some 80 per cent of countries still allow animal testing for cosmetics, despite the fact that alternative tests are available that are more reliable, faster and cheaper than the cruel animal tests they could replace.

The introduction of the Humane Cosmetics Act on March 5 by US Representative Jim Moran, follows extensive campaigning in the US by Cruelty Free International. The organization is now calling on animal-lovers to lend their support to the campaign by signing a petition.

Cruelty Free International’s CEO, Michelle Thew, added: “With the introduction of the Humane Cosmetics Act, we are hopeful that it won’t be long before animal cosmetics testing here in the US is consigned to history.”
