In November 2013 in San Donaci near Brindisi, Italy, Maria Tu Lu Campu passed away. "Maria of the fields" when translated into English had her funeral at the Santa Maria Assunta church.
According to Il Messaggero, an Italian newspaper, Maria had a huge heart and had taken in four different rescue dogs. When she passed away Ciccio, a twelve-year-old German Shepard followed Maria’s casket to the church. Ciccio loved Maria so much that he has came back to the church daily hoping Maria will be there waiting for him.
Local priest Donato Panna says that Ciccio shows up daily and quietly sits through all the masses, funerals and baptisms without making a peep.
The village has graciously taken on the burden of taking care of Ciccio and the three other dogs previously cared for by Maria tu lu Campu.
The village has even gone as far as setting a small shelter near the church for Ciccio to make sure he is comfortable and has a place to rest.
It breaks my heart to think that Ciccio is waiting for Maria’s return.
